A rotating drum causes friction and attrition between steel rods and ore particles. But note that the term 'rod mill' is also used as a synonym for a slitting mill, which makes rods of iron or other metal. Rod mills are less common than ball mills for grinding minerals.
The rods used in the mill, usually a high-carbon steel can vary in both the length and the diameter. However, the smaller the rod is, the larger the total surface area and hence will be, and the grinding efficiency will be greater.

Cylinder body is equipped with the appropriate grinding media steel bar. Grinding media plays the role of centrifugal force and friction, and it was promoted to a certain height, the state was thrown down or fall off the vent. By grinding the material from the mouth into the cylinder, the continuous internal movement is shattered.
The features of rod mill are that in the ore grinding process, the grinding media contact with the ore in a linear manner, so that it has selective grinding function. The granularity of the final products is even, and the amount of the particles that are over crushed and ground is low. When used for coarse grinding, the processing amount of rod mill is higher than that of the ball mill with the same specification.
The electro motor drives the cylinder to rotate through the reduction gears and the peripheral rack wheel reducer transmission, or the low speed synchronous motor directly drives the cylinder to rotate through the peripheral rack wheel reducer transmission. Inside the cylinder, there are proper ore grinding media-steel rod. Under the eccentric force and frictional force, the ore grinding media are lifted to a certain height and fall down in the state of dropping. The materials to be ground continuously go into the cylinder from the ore feeding mouth and are crushed by the moving grinding media, and then are discharged by the overflow and the force of continuous feeding to go to the next procedure.
